  1. Skill in horse riding, as practised under
  2. International Equestrian Federation rules. An
  3. Olympic sport, there are three main branches
  4. of equestrianism: show jumping, three-day
  5. eventing, and dressage. Showjumping is horse
  6. jumping over a course of fences. The winner
  7. is usually the competitor with fewest
  8. `faults' (penalty marks given for knocking
  9. down or refusing fences), but in timed
  10. competitions it is the competitor completing
  11. the course most quickly, additional seconds
  12. being added for mistakes. Three-Day Eventing
  13. tests the all-round abilities of a horse and
  14. rider in dressage, testing a horse's response
  15. to control; cross-country, testing speed and
  16. endurance; and showjumping, in a final
  17. modified contest. Dressage tests the horse's
  18. obedience skills and control of the rider.
  19. Tests consist of a series of movements at
  20. walk, trot, canter, with each movement marked
  21. by judges who look for suppleness, balance
  22. and the special harmony between rider and
  23. horse. The term is derived from the French
  24. `dresser' which means training. It became an
  25. Olympic sport in 1960. The World Championship
  26. was first held in 1953 for men, and 1965 for
  27. women; since 1978 for both concurrently.
